What is Mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is a popular treatment aimed at delivering skin boosters to improve skin quality, improve hydration and stimulate collagen. Injections into the superficial layers of the skin allows for a longer duration of action of the substances in the areas injected.

How is mesotherapy done?

First the skin is numbed to minimize pain. The mesotherapy technique involves the injection of active substances into the skin with a needle. This can be done with a regular needle and syringe, but Dr. Fisher prefers to use an electronic 9 needle injector which allows for a more rapid, safe, and precise treatment.

What can be injected with mesotherapy?

Hyaluronic acid mixed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, skin brighteners, exosomes, and wrinkle relaxers are common serums that can be injected with mesotherapy. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) and platelet rich fibrin (PRF) are also excellent sources of growth factors that can be injected to improve skin quality, radiance, and texture.

Who can benefit from mesotherapy?

Patients who are looking to reduce wrinkles, improve hydration and brightness of the skin are good candidate for mesotherapy.

Who should not get mesotherapy?

You should not undergo mesotherapy if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have inflammatory acne, or are immunocompromised. Patients with platelet or blood clotting disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, chronic liver, or autoimmune diseases are also not good candidates for mesotherapy. If you have an active skin infection in the area to be treated or tend to develop keloid scars you should not undergo mesotherapy treatment.

What areas can be treated with mesotherapy?

Skin boosters can be delivered by mesotherapy anywhere on the body, but the most common site of injection is the face.

Is mesotherapy painful?

Mesotherapy injections cause minimal pain. A topical numbing agent is applied to the skin to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

What are the side effects of mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy is generally a very safe procedure. There will be some swelling, bruising and redness that will last for 2-5 days. The formation of microdeposits of mesotherapy solutions occurs and disappears within a few minutes. There is a risk of infection, bleeding, and scarring, but this is rare if appropriate techniques are followed. There is always a risk of allergic reaction when substances are injected into the skin.

How do I prepare for mesotherapy treatment?

You can continue all skin care products including retinol, antioxidants, and growth factors before mesotherapy treatment. Blood thinning medications (ASA, aspirin, ibuprofen), supplements (fish oil, Vitamin E) or herbal remedies (garlic, ginkgo, dong quai, ginger, turmeric) do not need to be stopped although they will increase the risk of bruising. It is advisable to avoid sun exposure or tanning for 2 weeks before the procedure. If you have a history of cold sores or shingles in the area to be treated, you should take a prescription antiviral medication to prevent a flare up of cold sores or shingles.

What should I do after mesotherapy treatment?

Cold compresses may be used if there is any swelling or bruising. A gentle cleanser followed by a moisturizer should be applied to the skin two times a day. Mineral sunscreen with at least SPF 30 should be applied daily in the morning for the following 4 weeks to prevent any dyspigmentation of the skin. Makeup may be applied after 24 hours. Active skin care products such as retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, vitamin C or exfoliants can be resumed after 2 days unless any redness persists. You may resume regular physical activities the next day.

How often should you do mesotherapy?

Mesotherapy can be done as soon as every 4 weeks depending on the condition being treated. Most treatments are done every 3-4 months.

Is mesotherapy the same as microneedling?

Mesotherapy is not the same as microneedling. Microneedling creates microchannels in the skin that can be used to deliver active substances. Mesotherapy involves direct injection of active substances into the skin with a needle.
